Prediction updates for the weekend of August 30th
Not a bad weekend overall prediction wise. 5-2 on Saturday, which translates to 10-3 on the year. Not a great weekend of games, quality wise, but it is certainly good to have college football back. And now, some commentary about the games:
- East Carolina beats #17 Virginia Tech 27-22. I got this one wrong, but I don’t mind. I did say that Sean Glennon is terrible and this game was proof. Cut Glennon and start Tyrod Taylor. By the way, Skip Holtz is going to be snatched up by some bigger school sooner rather than later. And there is no way that VTech should have been ranked in the top 25. Terrible.
- #3 USC beat down Virginia 52-7. Mark Sanchez is good. USC is good. How good? Not sure yet, as Virginia is much worse than I thought. If USC can stay focused, they will be tough to handle. Can’t wait for the game against Ohio State.
- Utah beat Michigan 25-23 in an amazingly boring game. Michigan’s offense is really bad right now, but I suppose that was to be expected. What wasn’t expected for me was how bad Michigan’s defense looked at times. They couldn’t get Utah off the field at times, which proved to be their downfall. Michigan will get better, but this was pitiful.
- #7 LSU beats down Appalachian State 41-13. I was close with my prediction here with LSU winning by 28 instead of 30. LSU has some straight-up amazing athletes.
- Nebraska beats Western Michigan 47-24. I said 28, NU wins by 23. Not bad. Nebraska is better, but why were they throwing the ball when they were up by three touchdowns? They have at least three capable running backs with Marlon Lucky, Quentin Castille, and Roy Helu, Jr. RUN THE BALL!
- #24 Alabama bitch slaps #9 Clemson 34-10. Just as I predicted, Clemson crashes and burns to start the year. Not to say that they can’t come back from this to have a very good year and possibly play in a BCS bowl, but come on. Tommy Bowden is still their coach. Not going to happen.
- #6 Missouri puts up 52 points on Illinois and wins 52-42. Who said Missouri would win by 10? Oh yeah, I did. Not too shabby. This was an entertaining game to watch, as one might expect with 94 points being scored. Both teams are fast, but Jeremy Maclin is un-freaking-believable. His kick return for a TD was a thing of beauty, as he blew by everyone on the field. Very impressive indeed.
One thing that I forgot to do before the season started was to give you my prediction for the BCS National Championship game. So here it is: Oklahoma vs. Florida. I’ve wavered on the Florida pick for a little while now, going back and forth between the Gators and USC. But I have to believe that the winner of the SEC will be in the title game and I think that Florida will be that team. As far as Oklahoma goes, if they can stay focused (and not lose to a shitty team halfway through the season), I think they’ll be right there too. They are LOADED with talent on offense, and I think their defense will come around.
What do you think? Drop me a line and let me know.
I’ll be back tomorrow with predictions for this weekend of college football as well as the 1st week of the NFL season.
